Many dogs suffer from itchy and inflamed skin, and it can really affect their quality of life.
It’s no fun for them to feel like scratching all the time! While severe skin problems are best handled by your veterinarian, there are many home remedies that can soothe your dog’s itchy skin and make them more comfortable.
Fish oil contains omega fatty acids which act as a natural anti-inflammatory and can relieve skin inflammation. They also improve your dog’s coat condition, leaving their coat soft and luxurious. You can give your dog 1000mg of fish oil for every 10kg (22lbs) body weight each day.
Tea Tree Oil is a natural antiseptic which is effective in relieving skin infections. Either wash your dog in a Tea Tree Oil shampoo, or dilute the oil and apply directly to your dog’s skin. Keep in mind that just because a product is natural, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe. Tea Tree Oil can be very toxic to dogs if used incorrectly, and some dogs have actually died from Tea Tree Oil toxicity. If you choose to use the raw oil, make sure you dilute it until there is only 10% tea tree oil in the solution you apply to your dog’s skin.
Oatmeal is a well-regarded home remedy for skin itches. You can make a paste of oatmeal and water and apply it to your dog’s skin. As you can imagine, this is very messy and best done outside!
Fleas are a common cause of skin irritation and inflammation in dogs. Many people add brewer’s yeast to their dog’s food to repel these blood sucking parasites. It is perfectly safe for dogs, but may not be as effective as their owners would like. The biggest part your dog’s flea problem is in their environment – in their bedding and the dirt in the back yard. Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled around your yard to dehydrate any immature fleas in the ground.
In Summary – Home remedies for skin problems can be effective and save you money. If you find they are not as effective as you would like, get in touch with your vet. They can prescribe medication to relieve your dog’s irritated skin, and help them to feel better very quickly.
